  • KARATE

    • lionPic2

Karate was developed over hundreds of years on the small island of Okinawa as a means of weaponless self-defense. While karate is still practiced as self-defense, it is also practiced as a means of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and moral development. Students polish their hearts and minds as they polish their self-defense skills.

Because karate is more than self defense, it is often called karate-do, meaning “the way of karate”. Karate is a balanced exercise, involving both mind and body, challenging to learn and physically demanding.

    • lionPic3

Don’t let that scare you. It’s also lots of fun! You will make new friends, work together in peace and cooperation, relieve stress, improve fitness, sharpen your mind and develop self-confidence.

  • MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY

Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices. They are practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the “Science and Art” of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, and means “Arts of Mars,” where Mars is the Roman god of war. Some martial arts are considered ‘traditional’ and are tied to an ethnic, cultural or religious background, while others are modern systems developed either by a founder or an association.

    About Kickboxing

The term kickboxing itself was introduced in the 1960s as a Japanese anglicism by Japanese boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi for a hybrid martial art combining Muay Thai and karate which he had introduced in 1958. The term was later also adopted by the American variant. Since there has been a lot of cross-fertilization between these styles, with many practitioners training or competing under the rules of more than one style, the history of the individual styles cannot be seen in isolation from one another. The French term Boxe pieds-poings (literally “feet-fists-boxing”) is also used in the sense of “kickboxing” in the general meaning, including French boxing (savate) as well as American and Japanese kickboxing, Burmese and Thai boxing, any style of full contact karate, etc.
